Upgrade your springtail production with Springtail Chocolate - Springtail Clay Substrate Media, FrogDaddy’s premium clay-based culturing media formulated for reliable moisture balance, easy harvesting, and long-term springtail colony performance.

This proprietary mineral-fortified clay blend was developed for culturing a wide range of terrestrial springtails and is the same media used in FrogDaddy shallow dish springtail cultures. The smooth clay surface allows springtails to congregate visibly on top of the media, making feeding, monitoring, and harvesting significantly easier compared to charcoal or soil-based methods.
Springtail Chocolate is designed to hydrate into a stable, toothpaste-like consistency that retains moisture exceptionally well while resisting rapid breakdown over time. Clay-based media is widely favored among bioactive keepers because it provides a durable culturing surface and supports calcium availability important for springtail growth and reproduction.

Picture 1: The clay based media in powder form.

Picture 2: Picture of a preparation of your springtail chocolate if you ordered the 5 count. Note that you will ONLY receive the clay bag and the glove. Cups and lids are sold in our kit, and are square snap cups, not circular.

Picture 3: Adding your 1/2 to 3/4 cup of water to the bag. The clay will be shipped to you dry in a bag as shown. You will need to add 1/2 to 3/4 cup of water to the bag and agitate thoroughly, making sure the zipper stays sealed. Start with 1/2 and add slowly until you have toothpaste consistency.

Picture 4: The bag after water has been added to the clay. It should be a thick consistency.

Picture 5: Cut the bag along the corner to make a makeshift piping bag like you see for icing!

Picture 6: Evenly distribute clay (looks great, right - haha) into each of your 5 cups. Each bag makes a 5 count of springtail cups. Using your gloved hand or a spreading tool such as a wooden shim, spread clay around each cup.

Picture 7: 5 Springtail cups with clay spread. Recall that if you purchase our kit, they’ll be square shaped.

Picture 8: A loaded springtail culture. You have to “seed”, or dump in adult springtails from another culture to finish making a culture. There are no eggs in the clay.

Keep cultures moist by spraying lightly until clay glistens (about once a week to every two weeks based on thickness). Feed springtails a small pinch of food each week.
