Native to South and Southeast Asia, Selaginella wallichii is a tropical lycophyte in the Selaginellaceae family known for its finely divided foliage, upright-to-spreading growth, and affinity for consistently humid forest environments. Its documented range extends from the Indian subcontinent through portions of mainland Southeast Asia and Malesia, where it occurs in moist, shaded tropical habitats. Its fern-like texture and preference for atmospheric humidity make it particularly well suited to terrariums, dart frog vivariums, and naturalistic tropical plantings.
Despite frequently being grouped with mosses or ferns in horticulture, Selaginella wallichii is neither a true moss nor a fern. Selaginella are vascular spore-producing plants belonging to the lycophytes, an ancient lineage whose evolutionary history extends hundreds of millions of years into the Paleozoic. Their distant relatives were already established long before flowering plants evolved.
This ancient ancestry is reflected in the plant's distinctive architecture. Rather than producing conventional leaves, S. wallichii develops numerous tiny microphylls arranged along repeatedly branching stems. Together, these minute leaves create flattened sprays of intricate foliage that resemble delicate fern fronds when viewed from a distance.
The resulting texture is exceptionally useful in planted vivariums. Broad-leaved Begonias, aroids, and Gesneriads can visually dominate an enclosure, while S. wallichii provides a much finer botanical scale. Established plants develop dense, layered vegetation that can make a newly planted enclosure appear considerably more mature.
Growth is generally upright to ascending when young, with older stems spreading outward as the colony expands. Where stems encounter consistently moist substrate, portions may establish additional roots and help the plant occupy surrounding areas. Unlike very flat creeping Selaginella, S. wallichii can contribute noticeable vertical texture while remaining substantially finer than conventional tropical ferns.
The species is naturally associated with humid, shaded environments, and its cultivation reflects that ecology. Selaginella possess relatively delicate foliage with limited ability to withstand prolonged dehydration. Consistent atmospheric humidity and dependable root moisture are therefore considerably more important than allowing the plant to cycle through pronounced wet and dry periods.
A moisture-retentive but aerated substrate works particularly well. ABG-style vivarium mixes, tree fern fiber, sphagnum, fine bark, leaf-derived organic material, and porous mineral components can all support healthy growth. The substrate should remain evenly moist without becoming an anaerobic slurry.
High humidity—generally 70–100%—encourages lush foliage and reduces drying of the delicate growing tips. This makes S. wallichii naturally compatible with enclosed tropical systems. Gentle airflow remains valuable, however, because humid forest conditions involve moisture accompanied by air movement rather than permanently stagnant wet foliage.
Moderate filtered light is appropriate. Strong direct illumination is unnecessary, and excessive light combined with heat can rapidly dry the fine foliage. Under good diffuse vivarium lighting, established plants develop dense green growth without needing to occupy the brightest portion of the enclosure.
One important cultivation signal is the appearance of the growing tips. Selaginella can respond rapidly to insufficient moisture by curling or becoming crisp, while prolonged saturation combined with poor airflow can cause lower growth to deteriorate. Maintaining consistent moisture rather than extremes generally produces the strongest long-term results.
Unlike flowering plants, Selaginella wallichii never produces flowers or seeds. Reproduction occurs through spores produced in specialized structures called strobili, often appearing as compact terminal structures on fertile shoots. Selaginella are heterosporous, producing two different types of spores—microspores and megaspores—an evolutionary feature that makes the group particularly interesting botanically.
Vegetative propagation is considerably simpler in cultivation. Healthy stem sections containing established nodes can be positioned against moist substrate, sphagnum, or tree fern fiber and maintained under high humidity until new roots develop. Dividing an established colony is also straightforward.
In the Vivarium
Selaginella wallichii is especially useful as a foreground-to-midground textural plant in humid tropical vivariums and terrariums. Its fine branching foliage can fill visual gaps between mosses and larger vascular plants while contributing significantly more height and structure than most true mosses.
It looks particularly natural along the base of cork bark, around weathered branches, beside moss-covered stone, and across moist forest-floor substrate. Leaf litter can be worked around established colonies to create a convincing tropical understory without completely burying the growing tips.
The species pairs beautifully with Begonias, miniature orchids, Peperomia, Gesneriads, Marcgravia, mosses, and small tropical ferns. Its finely divided foliage is especially effective beside plants with broad or strongly patterned leaves, where the difference in texture makes both species more visually distinct.
For dart frog vivariums, S. wallichii is particularly appropriate because the warm, humid conditions maintained for many tropical frogs overlap well with its general moisture requirements. Established colonies can also increase structural complexity close to the substrate, although enough open leaf litter should remain available rather than allowing any groundcover to completely carpet the enclosure.
Its documented Asian distribution makes the species useful for South Asian and Southeast Asian biotope-inspired vivariums. Country-specific tags should be based on verified distribution and, for strict locality displays, preferably the provenance of the cultivated accession rather than assumptions based on the genus.

Its ancient lycophyte lineage, intricate microphylls, layered growth, and strong affinity for humid tropical conditions make it both scientifically interesting and exceptionally useful for creating mature, biologically convincing vivarium landscapes.
