Peruvian Pumice is a lightweight volcanic stone prized in vivarium and terrarium culture for its exceptional porosity, natural appearance, and ability to support healthy bioactive systems. Its highly textured surface provides excellent moisture retention while still allowing strong airflow throughout the substrate and hardscape, making it ideal for tropical enclosures, moss walls, epiphytic planting, and drainage applications.
In planted vivariums, Peruvian pumice helps create stable microclimates that encourage vigorous moss establishment and root development. The porous structure traps moisture and beneficial microorganisms, giving mosses, liverworts, and climbing plants a natural surface to anchor to over time. It also works exceptionally well as a substrate additive to improve aeration and prevent compaction in bioactive mixes.
Peruvian pumice can be used in a variety of ways:
Drainage layers in tropical terrariums and paludariums
Hardscape accents and naturalistic rock features
Mounting surfaces for mosses and epiphytic plants
Aeration additive for bioactive substrates
Humidity-supporting media in plant-focused enclosures
Its natural volcanic texture blends beautifully into rainforest-style builds while remaining lightweight and easy to work with compared to denser stone materials.
Directions for Use: Rinse thoroughly with clean water before use to remove natural volcanic dust and debris. Multiple rinses may be required until the water runs clear. For best results, soak and scrub the stone prior to introducing it into established vivarium systems or aquatic sections of paludariums.
