Derived from Leptochilus pteropus (widely known by its horticultural synonym Microsorum pteropus), a fern native throughout tropical and subtropical Asia, 'Windeløv' is a cultivated selection in the Polypodiaceae family distinguished by the finely branched, lace-like tips of its mature fronds. The cultivar was developed by Tropica and named for the company's founder, Holger Windeløv, so unlike wild Java Fern it should be treated as a horticultural cultivar rather than assigned its own geographic locality.
The wild species behind 'Windeløv' has an exceptionally broad Asian distribution, occurring from the Indian subcontinent and southern China through Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Guinea. It naturally occupies wet tropical habitats as a lithophytic or semi-aquatic fern, frequently associated with rocks, roots, woody debris, streams, and other environments where changing water levels can expose plants to either submerged or humid emersed conditions.
'Windeløv' retains this adaptability while introducing one of the most distinctive foliage forms available among Java Fern cultivars. Young leaves initially resemble conventional Java Fern, but mature fronds divide repeatedly near their tips into numerous narrow lobes. This creates an intricate, antler-like or lace-textured crown at the end of each leaf. As multiple fronds develop together, established plants form dense clusters with considerably more visual texture than the comparatively simple lance-shaped foliage of standard L. pteropus.
The cultivar generally remains relatively compact, commonly reaching approximately 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) under aquarium conditions. Its combination of moderate size and highly divided foliage makes it particularly useful where standard Java Fern would appear too coarse or eventually become visually dominant.
Like the wild species, 'Windeløv' grows from a thick horizontal rhizome. This structure produces both roots and new fronds and is central to successful cultivation. The rhizome should never be deeply buried in substrate. Instead, the fern is best positioned directly on hardscape where its roots can gradually anchor the plant while the rhizome remains exposed and oxygenated.
Driftwood, cork bark, lava rock, natural stone, and other textured surfaces make excellent mounting sites. Initially, the plant can be secured until new roots establish; once attached, mature specimens often look as though they naturally colonized the hardscape.
This characteristic makes 'Windeløv' particularly interesting beyond conventional aquarium culture. Because the parent species naturally tolerates fluctuating water levels, the cultivar can be maintained submerged, grown along the waterline of a paludarium, or transitioned into humid emersed conditions. The appearance of the foliage may change somewhat between aquatic and aerial growth, but the characteristic branched tips remain the defining feature.
Lighting requirements are modest. Low to moderate illumination is sufficient for healthy submerged growth, while moderate filtered lighting works well in emersed displays. Because this is a relatively slow-growing fern, extremely intense aquarium lighting is unnecessary and can encourage algae to establish on older foliage before the plant produces enough new growth to replace it.
The slow growth rate is actually advantageous in naturalistic vivariums and paludariums. Once positioned correctly, 'Windeløv' can remain integrated into the same piece of hardscape for years with relatively little maintenance. Older or damaged fronds can simply be removed near the rhizome while new growth continues from active growing points.
Like other Java Ferns, reproduction is biologically interesting. Mature fertile fronds can develop sori containing spores, visible as brown markings associated with reproductive tissue. Java Ferns are also well known for producing small vegetative plantlets directly from older leaves. These plantlets develop their own roots and foliage before eventually separating, providing an easy means of propagation and occasionally allowing young ferns to establish elsewhere in a humid enclosure.
For emersed cultivation, high humidity becomes much more important than it is underwater. Plants transitioned from submerged growth should be maintained under very humid conditions while they replace aquatic foliage with leaves better adapted to aerial conditions. Once established, consistently moist roots, an exposed rhizome, and gentle airflow provide an excellent balance for long-term growth.
In the Vivarium
Leptochilus pteropus 'Windeløv' is particularly effective around waterfalls, stream margins, seep walls, humid cork bark, and partially submerged driftwood. Its finely divided foliage creates substantially more texture than standard Java Fern and can give wet hardscape a mature, naturally colonized appearance.
It pairs especially well with mosses, Bucephalandra, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and other plants associated with wet tropical environments. In larger dart frog vivariums, it can also be grown completely above water provided its mounting area remains humid and the plant is properly acclimated to emersed growth.
Because 'Windeløv' is a cultivar, biotope tagging requires a little nuance. The parent species is native to tropical and subtropical Asia, but 'Windeløv' itself was created in cultivation. It is therefore appropriate to associate the listing with Asian Java Fern ancestry, but the cultivar should not be represented as a naturally occurring population from Java, Indonesia, or any other individual locality.
For growers who appreciate the reliability of Java Fern but want something with greater visual complexity, 'Windeløv' is one of the finest selections available. Its branched fronds, manageable dimensions, hardscape-growing habit, and ability to transition between aquatic and humid emersed culture make it exceptionally versatile for aquariums, paludariums, and naturalistic vivarium displays.
