Native to tropical West and West-Central Africa, Anubias hastifolia is a distinctive rheophytic aroid in the Araceae family recognized for its large arrowhead-shaped foliage, elongated petioles, and imposing emersed growth. Its natural distribution includes Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa, where it occurs in humid tropical environments associated with streams, riverbanks, marshy ground, and periodically inundated forest.

Among cultivated Anubias, A. hastifolia is immediately recognizable by its mature leaf shape. Young plants may initially produce comparatively simple leaves, but established specimens develop sagittate to hastate blades with two pronounced basal lobes extending away from the central leaf. The resulting arrowhead or spear-shaped foliage is dramatically different from the rounded leaves of A. barteri var. nana or the triangular foliage of A. gracilis.

The species name reflects this characteristic: hastifolia refers to spear-shaped foliage. Mature plants can become substantial, with long petioles elevating the leaves well above the rhizome. This gives A. hastifolia a more architectural, upright appearance than many creeping Anubias and makes it particularly effective as a structural plant in larger tropical displays.

Like other members of the genus, Anubias hastifolia develops from a thick creeping rhizome. New leaves and roots emerge sequentially along this horizontal stem while the growing tip slowly advances. The plant's pace is deliberate, but established specimens become increasingly impressive as successive leaves mature and the rhizome branches.

Its natural relationship with water is more complex than the familiar image of Anubias as an aquarium plant might suggest. Anubias are adapted to tropical environments where changing water levels can periodically inundate plants growing along streams and river margins. A. hastifolia is capable of surviving submerged conditions, but its morphology and large mature foliage make emersed and semi-aquatic cultivation especially relevant.

In a paludarium, the plant can be positioned with its roots and rhizome close to water while allowing the foliage to extend naturally into humid air. This permits development of the robust aerial leaves characteristic of mature plants and can produce a much more imposing specimen than permanent underwater culture.

The rhizome should never be deeply buried. Roots can penetrate substrate or establish themselves around rock and wood, but the thick rhizome benefits from remaining exposed and well oxygenated. Deep burial in dense, stagnant media can eventually lead to deterioration.

For naturalistic cultivation, the plant can be secured to driftwood, cork bark, lava rock, river stone, or other textured hardscape. Roots gradually grip the surface and work into surrounding crevices, eventually making the specimen appear naturally established. In riparian plantings, roots may also extend downward into nutrient-bearing substrate while the rhizome remains above the surface.

Light requirements are moderate. Bright filtered or moderate indirect illumination supports healthy emersed growth, while lower light is generally tolerated because the species is adapted to humid tropical forest environments. Intense direct lighting is unnecessary and may be counterproductive, particularly in enclosed systems where it also increases leaf temperature and evaporation.

High humidity is especially valuable when plants are grown above water. Conditions around 70–100% humidity facilitate acclimation and support healthy new foliage, particularly when a specimen has previously been maintained submerged. Gentle airflow should accompany elevated humidity so that leaves and the rhizome are not continuously surrounded by stagnant moisture.

A submerged plant transitioning into emersed culture may lose some older leaves. This is a normal consequence of moving between two fundamentally different environments. New foliage produced in air develops structural and physiological characteristics better suited to aerial conditions and is often substantially firmer than submerged growth.

Growth is slow enough that maintenance requirements remain modest. Older leaves can be removed near their petioles as necessary, while healthy rhizomes continue producing new growth. Propagation is accomplished by dividing sufficiently mature rhizomes, ensuring each division retains roots and viable growing tissue.

Like other aroids, Anubias hastifolia produces a spathe-and-spadix inflorescence. Mature emersed specimens are particularly interesting when flowering because the inflorescences provide an opportunity to observe the same fundamental floral architecture found throughout the Araceae—from tiny Bucephalandra to enormous tropical aroids.

In the Vivarium

Anubias hastifolia is best regarded as a plant for large vivariums, paludariums, riparian displays, and substantial water features. This is not a miniature Anubias. Given favorable conditions, mature specimens can develop large leaves on long petioles and should be given enough vertical and horizontal space to display their characteristic shape.

It is particularly effective beside streams, waterfall basins, humid rock faces, and partially submerged wood. Allowing the roots to reach a consistently wet area while the foliage remains above water closely matches the ecological niche that makes Anubias so adaptable to paludarium culture.

Its large arrow-shaped leaves create excellent visual contrast against fine-textured mosses, ferns, and stem plants. Smaller Anubias and Bucephalandra can occupy nearby hardscape, while A. hastifolia provides the larger structural foliage needed to create depth in substantial displays.

For dart frog vivariums, mature size is the primary consideration. The species can thrive under warm, humid conditions, but it is better suited to large enclosures where its foliage will not overwhelm the planting. Juvenile specimens may fit smaller displays temporarily but should not be treated as permanent nano-vivarium plants.
