Native to the tropical river systems and rainforest waterways of Cameroon and neighboring regions of West Africa, Anubias barteri is a hardy rheophytic member of the Araceae family that has become one of the foundational plants in aquarium, paludarium, and vivarium culture. The cultivar 'Mini Coin' is one of the smallest forms available, selected for its exceptionally compact growth and nearly circular foliage that resembles tiny green coins scattered across wood and stone.

Unlike larger varieties of Anubias barteri, 'Mini Coin' maintains an extremely compact stature, making it particularly well suited for nano vivariums, paludariums, and highly detailed naturalistic displays. Mature leaves are thick, leathery, and rounded, often measuring only a fraction of the size of standard Anubias barteri. Under emersed conditions, leaves often become slightly thicker and richer in color, and mature plants may occasionally produce the characteristic cream-colored spathe and spadix that identify members of the Araceae family.

Bright indirect or moderate filtered light generally produces the healthiest growth. In nature, the species is protected beneath dense rainforest canopies, so intense direct sunlight is neither necessary nor desirable. Stable moisture combined with excellent airflow around the rhizome encourages long-term health and closely replicates the oxygen-rich stream environments where the species evolved.

Because the rhizome is the plant's primary growing structure, it should always remain exposed. Burying it beneath substrate may eventually lead to rot. Instead, allow the roots to naturally secure themselves to hardscape where the plant can gradually establish into a permanent part of the enclosure.

Within vivariums, Anubias barteri 'Mini Coin' excels as a foreground or midground accent, particularly around waterfalls, seep walls, stream margins, and moss-covered rockwork. The tiny rounded leaves create a pleasing contrast against finer textures such as mosses and Selaginella while pairing beautifully with Bucephalandra, miniature ferns, and other humidity-loving tropical plants.
